Airlines serving McCarran International Airport have put passengers on notice that a winter storm in the Northeast may lead to delays and cancellations later today, and several scheduled flights already have been canceled.
Most airlines have announced that passengers with tickets for flights on either day can change reservations without penalty.
Southwest, Delta, American, United, JetBlue, Spirit, Hawaiian and Virgin America already have canceled 16 flights to the Northeast from Las Vegas, among an estimated 2,800 canceled nationwide.
As of early this afternoon, 18 airports along the East Coast and the Great Lakes were experiencing excessive delays, according to the FlightStats website that monitors traffic delays.
Weather forecasters said conditions would likely worsen in the hours ahead.
Southwest listed 11 airport destinations for which passengers can make changes. Delta listed 16 cities, JetBlue 20 cities, American, 14 and United, eight.
Among the major destinations expecting delays or cancellations are New York, with three major airports, Washington D.C., with three major airports, Boston, Philadelphia and Norfolk, Va.
It’s also possible that other flights in the West will be affected by the storm because aircraft used on flights from the cities affected by storms may not be available for connecting flights.
McCarran officials and the airlines have recommended that passengers contact the airlines to determine the status of their flights.
