Nevada State Bank gave $8,000 to Ruby Thomas Elementary School in celebration of Teach Children to Save. In addition, bank employees presented lessons on saving money to students.

The Foundation Assisting Seniors moved to 2518 Anthem Village Drive, Suite 102, Henderson.

Cox Communications and Findlay Automotive Group gave $1,000 to the 2018 student winner of iChoose to Drive, a Cox safe-driving campaign. The winning video, “Every 15 Minutes,” was created and produced by Parker Badenhuizen of West Career and Technical Academy. Cox and Findlay also gave $1,000 to the school. Kiplyn Sweikert, Badenhuizen’s teacher/mentor, won an iPad Pro and a $100 AMEX gift card from Cox Media.

Safe Nest received $64,000 from the Allstate Foundation Helping Hands grant program. Also, 64 Allstate agency owners and financial specialists collected and dropped off two 16-foot truckloads of donations for domestic violence victims.

Construction vs. Cancer, presented by Las Vegas Paving Corp., raised almost $300,000 at its inaugural event. Criss Angel was presented with the American Cancer Society Compassionate Heart Award.

NeighborWorks America awarded $244,000 to Neighborhood Housing Services of Southern Nevada.

The Mercer Las Vegas’ grand opening raised $21,000 for the StoryBook Homes Long-Term Follow-Up Clinic for childhood cancer survivors. The clinic is operated by Cure 4 The Kids Foundation.

The Smith Center for the Performing Arts honored local teachers at the third annual Heart of Education Awards. Each winner received $5,000 and each winner’s school received $1,000 to go toward a program of the teacher’s choice. Award recipients were: Stephenia Courtney, William E. Orr Middle School; Julie Pribyl, Roy W. Martin Middle School; Dana Wynne, Jerome D. Mack Middle School; Ciara Owens, Mario C. and JoAnne Monaco Middle School; Shawn Kelly, John C. Fremont Middle School; Kristine Grant, Sig Rogich Middle School; Kevin Chung, Advanced Technologies Academy; Brian Driscoll, Western High School; Erin Hill, Green Valley High School; Stacey Johnston, Las Vegas Academy of the Arts; Andrew Magness, Valley High School; Ramiro Martinez, Del Sol Academy of the Performing Arts; Amy Murray, Spring Valley High School; Luanne Wagner, Ed W. Clark High School; Lisa Dalton, Reynaldo L. Martinez Elementary School; Karen Kanwhen, Lewis E. Rowe Elementary School; Alana London, Eileen B. Brookman Elementary School; Olivia Terrell, Dr. C. Owen Roundy Elementary School; Laura Juliana Urtubey, Crestwood Elementary School; and Tika Epstein, Keith C. & Karen W. Hayes Elementary School.

Cox Las Vegas and local organizations partnered to give $3,500 college scholarships to the following students: Jewelena Gomez, Bishop Gorman High School (Cox and AFAN); Anish Devati, Clark High School (Cox and Asian Community Development Council); Lianelys Cabrera Martinez, Las Vegas Academy of the Arts (Cox and Chicanos Por La Causa); Vincent Pan, Clark High School (Cox and Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce); Jera Manesse, Las Vegas Academy of the Arts (Cox and Girls on the Run); Denise Castle, Junior League of Las Vegas (Cox and Junior League of Las Vegas); Alexander Yung, Advanced Technologies Academy (Cox and Organization of Chinese Americans); Dulce Rebuli, Durango High School (Cox and Puerto Rican Association of Las Vegas); D’Vonye Jackson, Advanced Technologies Academy (Cox and Theta Pi Lambda Foundation); and Taylor Johnson, Arbor View High School (Cox and Urban Chamber of Commerce).

The Nevada State Historic Preservation Office, through the Nevada Commission for Cultural Centers and Historic Preservation grant program, awarded $950,000 to 15 historic and cultural preservation projects throughout Nevada. Southern Nevada recipients include the First United Methodist Church ($20,000), La Concha Lobby at the Neon Museum ($60,000), the Mesquite High School gym ($30,000) and Harrison House ($90,000).

The College of Southern Nevada Foundation honored community supporters and first responders, as represented by CSN alumni, at its Blooming in Blue gala. Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority CEO Rossi Ralenkotter was awarded the Community Achievement Award. The Community Education Award was given to Switch. CSN presented the Community Hero Award to a group of alumni nurses, emergency personnel, police officers and firefighters that were involved in the Oct. 1 response.

State Farm gave $11,000 to Jobs for Nevada’s Graduates (JAG Nevada). Funds will go toward enhanced tutoring services.

Project 150 partnered with Southwest Medical Associates to open a student resource room at Desert Pines High School. SMA donated a refrigerator, microwave, storage space and clothing rack. The resource room will also have food items, clothing, hygiene products and school supplies.

MGM Resorts International pledged $25,000 to support the UNLV University Libraries’ Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada project, an amount matched by a National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge Grant that was awarded to UNLV University Libraries in December 2017.

Huntridge Family Clinic founder John “Rob” Phoenix was given the Southern Nevada Health District’s Public Health Hero Award. Phoenix was given the honor for his work with the LGBTQ community and people living with HIV.
