The CEO of Tropicana’s parent company on Thursday hinted that the Las Vegas resort might not open as planned on Sept. 1.

Jay Snowden, the top executive for Penn National Gaming Inc., said during a quarterly earnings call that there’s a possibility the opening of the property could be delayed based on market conditions.

“We plan right now to open the Tropicana in September, but there’s a lot of moving parts,” Snowden said. “Every day we’re learning and our team on the ground there is continuing to do competitive assessments in terms of average daily room rates and RevPAR (revenue per available room) on the Strip, so we’re going to be really thoughtful around exactly when and how we reopen.”

Like other casino properties in Nevada, Tropicana closed operations per state mandate in mid-March out of concern about the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Like a handful of other Strip casinos — Mirage and Planet Hollywood included — Tropicana has yet to reopen. Tropicana officials announced last month their plans to open in early September.
