Pinot’s Palette studio owners Reed and Judy Alewel were awarded the Happy Place award at the fifth annual Pinot’s Palette National Conference and Retreat.

Magnet Schools of America selected Clark County School District Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky as its Superintendent of the Year. MSA honored Las Vegas’ Walter Bracken STEAM Academy with the Elementary Magnet School Merit Award of Excellence. Henderson’s Thurman White Academy of the Performing Arts received the New and Emerging Magnet School Merit Award of Excellence.

Metro Officers Sam Solorio and Dave Corbin received a Top Cops Honorable Mention award from the National Association of Police Organizations.

Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman received the 2017 Thomas H. Muehlenbeck Award for Excellence in Local Government for the city’s Amazon Alexa skill. The award is presented by the Alliance for Innovation to government agencies using technology to better serve communities. The city’s Alexa skill provides information about Las Vegas, parks, elected officials, City Council meetings, elections and more.

Scott Adams is Las Vegas’ city manager.

Gina Harris is regional vice president of claims for ProAssurance, a liability insurer of doctors.

“Investment Atlas II, Using History as a Financial Tool,” by Ken Winans of Winans Investments, was awarded the bronze medal in the finance/investment/economics category of the Independent Publisher Book’s IPPY Awards.

The Nevada Department of Agriculture hired Raul Godinez as an agriculture enforcement officer to monitor and enforce agricultural law in Southern Nevada.

Four people joined the Destination Services Association: Carl Caprioglio, Oglio Entertainment owner; Mike McHugh, Stoney’s Rockin’ Country vice president of marketing; Glenn Parker, Cascadia Sportsmanagement Inc. owner; and David Watts, Keep Memory Alive Event Center manager.

The U.S. Green Building Council Nevada and Green Alliance recognized leaders in the sustainability movement at the GreenFest Awards Gala. The Rob Dorinson Environmental Hero Award went to Ciara Byrne and Kim MacQuarrie, co-founders of Green Our Planet. The Community Green Building Legacy Award went to Cashman Equipment headquarters. The Community Leader in Green Schools Award went to the Las Vegas Academy for the Arts. The Community Volunteer Leadership Award went to Vinny Spotleson, a longtime champion of green building and an early member of both USGBC Nevada and Green Alliance. The Transformers Award went to Zion Community Garden, Conservation District of Southern Nevada. The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Pat Mulroy, former general manager of the Southern Nevada Water Authority and the Las Vegas Valley Water District.

JoAnn Rupiper, employee health nurse with the Southern Nevada Health District, has been named Centers for Disease Control’s Childhood Immunization Champion for her efforts to promote childhood immunization in Las Vegas.

Southern Nevada teams that placed in the 2017 Donald W. Reynolds Governor’s Cup include RAD and Window Magic, which placed first and second in the graduate division, and GameTrainer, which placed second in the undergraduate level. RAD, a team project from UNLV, stands for resilient arthroplasty device, new and patented technology for knee pain and total knee arthroplasty (replacements). Window Magic’s technology can enhance or completely alter the view out of any resort suite window. GameTrainer is an esports website in which users learn how to improve at video games, and get trained and coached by top-ranking competitive players.

Summerlin Hospital is expanding and renovating multiple areas within the 454-bed acute care hospital as part of a $16 million capital improvement project. Key elements include adding 36 medical-surgical beds and expanding the Birthplace at Summerlin Hospital by adding an operating suite, expanding the maternal triage area and increasing the newborn nursery capacity. Additionally, the Children’s Medical Center pediatric unit will undergo renovations.
