City National Bank and Barnes & Noble delivered more than $20,000 in books and cash to Fay Herron and Lincoln elementary schools in North Las Vegas.
Nevada State Bank donated $5,000 to the Las Vegas office of SCORE, a nationwide nonprofit association dedicated to educating entrepreneurs.
A science experiment and two mission patches designed by Clark County School District students were sent to the International Space Station. Both projects are part of the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program, Mission 10. The two winning mission patches were selected from more than 3,000 designs. A local panel of judges selected Martha P. King Elementary School students Ella Morris and Julia Tregnan as the winners. Students also were challenged to design an experiment that would test the effects of microgravity. The experiment at John C. Vanderburg Elementary School emerged as the winner. Shari Abeyakoon, Kendall Allgower and Avery Sanford evaluated the effects of microgravity on seed germination as a possible source for food in long-term space travel. Funding and technical assistance was provided by Arcata Associates, Barrick Gold Corp., Desert Research Institute, the Public Education Foundation, the Davis Family Foundation, Nevada Space Grant Consortium, Nevada System of Higher Education, Howard Hughes Corp., the Ozmen Foundation at the Community Foundation of Western Nevada, Sierra Nevada Corp., UNLV College of Engineering, UNLV School of Community Health Sciences, the UNLV School of Life Sciences and the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education.
Walker Furniture donated new furniture and accessories to Walter Johnson Junior High as part of Teacher Appreciation Day. Walter Johnson was chosen thanks to a letter written by eighth-grade student Caitlyn Goddi on behalf of her teacher, Robert Cuccurullo. Goddi received $100 and Cuccurillo received a $150 gift certificate.
Nevada Health Centers received a 2006 Ford passenger van from the NV Energy vehicle donations program. The vehicle will be used to help with transportation needs of employees and supplies between NVHC’s 18 primary care health centers throughout Nevada.
The Epicurean Charitable Foundation of Las Vegas’ executive committee for 2017 and 2018 includes Craig Gilbert and Travis Lunn as vice presidents, Kevin Ball as treasurer and Tim Bowen as secretary. Melissa Arias remains the executive director. Sean DiCicco is president and Michael Kennedy is chairman of the board. Gilbert is a partner for Drive This! Entertainment, and Lunn is vice president of hotel operations for MGM Grand. Ball is corporate vice president of purchasing — strategic sourcing for American Casino & Entertainment Properties. Bowen is the vice president of food and beverage for Paris, Bally’s and Planet Hollywood.
PAL Humane Society is a donation site for Pets of the Homeless. Donations of pet food and supplies can be taken to 4155 N. Rancho Drive, Suite 150, Las Vegas, that will be delivered to a local food bank, homeless shelter or homeless encampment.
U.S. Bank partnered with Freedom Alliance, a charitable organization that provides support to injured military members and their families, in presenting the keys to a renovated, mortgage-free home to medically retired Army Sgt. 1st Class William “Joe” Haney. It is partnership’s the ninth such donation.
The Las Vegas City Council awarded 36 grants totaling $25,000 as part of the annual Youth Neighborhood Association Partnership Program, which offers grants of up to $1,000 for youths to create and neighborhood-based service learning projects.
HELP of Southern Nevada received two awards from Workforce Connections: the 2016 Champion Award in the Organization Category, and the 2016 Champion Award in the Individual Category, which was awarded to Denise Gee, chief executive workforce officer at the nonprofit. The Champion Award is Workforce Connections’ highest honor and is awarded to those organizations or individuals who demonstrate consistent outstanding skills, abilities and leadership contributions to the workforce development community.
Nevada State Bank donated $5,000 to Street Teens, a volunteer-based, nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting homeless, abandoned and at-risk youths.
Blossom Bariatrics donated $20,000 to the Las Vegas Metro Police Department Foundation.
Tippetts Mechanical donated plumbing services to the CARE Complex, a resource for the homeless, at 200 Foremaster Lane.
Approximately 60 people from the roofing industry volunteered with Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada to provide repairs to Henderson homes at 400 Holick Ave. and 1844 Ward Drive. The project was part of the International Roofing Expo’s eighth annual Community Service Day. Community Service Day sponsor Sika Sarnafil presented $20,000 to RTSNV. Volunteers and sponsors working on the homes included Sika Sarnafil, Damato Enterprises, ABC Supply Co. Inc., D & L Roofing, Carlisle Syntec Systems, Georgia Pacific and CentiMark.
Seventy students from Cheyenne and Clark high schools participated in a Google Cardboard workshop at RedFlint to learn how those devices can be used in education. After the workshop, 180 headsets and 30 phones were donated to the schools.
After-School All-Stars Las Vegas received $10,000 from Barrick Gold Corp. as primary sponsor of the organization’s All-Star Dodgeball Tournament.
Eric DeBonis joined the board of trustees of HELP of Southern Nevada. DeBonis is the senior vice president of operations for Southwest Gas.
